Ship Wreck provides further issues

A local resident has alerted us to some potential hazards to swimmers around the shipwreck that has recently surfaced at the Jury’s Gap end of the beach, as bathers might not see the wreck when the tide is in.

The RNLI and the Coastal Office encourage swimmers to use the safer swim zones during the bathing season and also maintain due diligence along the whole stretch of our beach all year round.

There is sharp wood within the wreck and also in the nearby groynes and jetty which, the resident felt, might present a hazard to everyone, not just swimmers.

CCN asked the Coastal Office for more information about this wreck and the surrounding area. We were advised that they are aware of the wreck but, as it is a wreck, it comes under maritime archaeology legislature and therefore can’t be touched – even to have safety markers placed on it!

The groyne and jetty belong to the Environment Agency and any potential hazards are routinely reported to the EA by our Coastal Office team. They are going to report these specific concerns on behalf of the newsletter and the local resident who brought them to our attention.

The Coastal Office went on to tell us that there is a planned end-of-season review in November which will involve users and tenants of the area, and will include a review of vital and non-vital signage along the Broomhill Sands promenade.

Within this, they will have a look at any extra signage needed, considering these hazards highlighted by this report.
