Strawberries & Cream?

Whilst there was a lot of focus this summer on the Euro 2024 football tournament, the All England Lawn Tennis Club competition at Wimbledon was running at the same time, with the gentlemen’s final taking place on the same day as the Euro 2024 football final. It seems that Spain is having a good year! Not only did they beat England in the football, but Spaniard – and reigning Wimbledon champion – Carlos Alcaraz won the Wimbledon men’s final, beating 7-times winner Novak Djokovic for the second consecutive year.

So how did the British players do?

In the men’s singles, Cameron Norrie was knocked out in the third round. In the women’s singles, Emma Raducanu bit the dust in the Round of 16.

Congratulations are due to Henry Patten and his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara who won the men’s doubles. Sadly, all the women’s doubles were knocked out by the second round.

In the mixed doubles, both of England’s last hopes respectably made it as far as the quarter finals before they were knocked out. (Jamie Murray (GB) / Taylor Townsend (USA) and Neal Skupski (GB) / Desirae Krawczyk (USA).

Meanwhile, England’s Alfie Hewett – a wheelchair user since the age of six – won two titles: the gentlemen’s wheelchair singles and the gentlemen’s wheelchair doubles (with partner Gordon Reid). At 26 years old, this was Hewett’s sixth consecutive win with Gordon Reid in the doubles, and his third consecutive singles final. However, it was his first singles win. In his victory speech he said, “I think today proved that no matter how many times you get knocked down, you can still get back up.”

Well done to all the British contenders!
