This & That – Toilet Talk

You will notice recently in the newsletter that, at last, our new toilet facilities in Central Car Park have finally opened – well timed indeed as I recently discovered that on the 19th of November, we celebrate World Toilet Day!

Originally established unofficially by the World Toilet Organisation in 2001 and subsequently declared official by the UN General Assembly in 2013, World Toilet Day is a global observance that raises awareness about the critical issue of sanitation and access to clean and safe toilets.

It is about taking action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation. Each year a specific theme is chosen for the day – and this year that is Sanitisation in a Changing World.

In 2015 leading multinational corporations Unilever, LIXIL and Kimberly-Clark, founded the Toilet Board Coalition to accelerate business solutions to the sanitation crisis. Their CEO, Greg Davies, issued the following message about World Toilet Day 2025:

In a changing world, one thing remains constant: we’ll always need the toilet.

And yet 3.4 billion people (nearly half the world’s population) still lack access to safely managed sanitation, creating a devastating impact on preventable diseases, both soil-transmitted and waterborne, not to mention public health and safety, as well as human dignity.

According to WHO, unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene are responsible for the deaths of around 1,000 children under five every day.
