More Northern Lights

In the middle of May, the famous Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, were visible across many parts of the country, including Camber! Usually only visible from Scandinavia, Alaska, Canada and Russia, the lights can occasionally be seen in the UK. In Scotland, the lights become visible every few months but the occurrence of a light show further south – indeed as far south as Camber – is a much rarer thing, and only occurs when there is a period of high geomagnetic activity, which is usually very short-lived.

On 12th and 13th September, social media platforms began filling with pictures of this incredible phenomenon being visible in the south of the country, just as the sun was setting, with many of the sightings coming from across East Sussex. It seems we were getting a second chance to see the lights, only a few months after their last arrival!

These pictures, taken in Camber, show the vibrant orange-pink display in the sky to the north and towards the east of the village, with the sunset in the west. Many Camber residents have reported being able to witness this magical moment, as the Northern Lights made another surprise appearance!
