Spooky Fun
Author Unknown

On Halloween night, with the moon up high,
Witches and werewolves go flying by,
Zombies and Mummies begin to cawl,
It’s the spookiest night, the best of them all!

Ghosts in sheets go “Boo!” in the dark,
Vampires hiss while dogs start to bark,
Jack-o-lanterns grin with an eerie smile,
As they light up the night, mile by mile.

Kids in costumes, from princess to clown,
Trick or treating all over town,
They knock on doors and eagerly say,
“Give us candy, or we’ll scare you away!”

But beware of the house with a creepy sound,
Where skeletons dance and zombies abound,
They’ll offer you treats, but with a surprise,
A tickle or two right before your goodbyes!

So if you’re out on this spooky night,
With the stars above and the pale moonlight,
Remember to laugh, have fun and play,
It’s a funny Halloween, hip-hip-hooray!

Contrary to the believe that its an American holiday promoted by chocolate companies, Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated around November 1st. The Celts, who lived over 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the UK, and northern France, believed that on this night the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead blurred.

They thought that the ghosts of the dead could return to earth, causing mischief and damaging crops. To ward off evil spirits, they lit huge bonfires and wore costumes made of animal skins and heads.

Later, as Christianity spread, the church adopted and modified these traditions. Pope Gregory III moved the date of All Saints’ Day, a day to honor saints, martyrs, and the faithful departed, to November 1st.

The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween. Over time, many pagan customs, such as wearing costumes and going door-to-door, merged with the Christian holiday, evolving into the modern-day celebration.

It is also the only time of year that most mother-in-laws can go out side without make-up….
