Did you know…
Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, is commemorated annually on November 5th. Its origins date back to 1605, when a group of Catholic conspirators, led by Robert Catesby, plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in what became known as the Gunpowder Plot.
Their aim was to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. One of the plotters, Guy Fawkes, was discovered guarding barrels of gunpowder hidden beneath the House of Lords. He was arrested, tortured, and later executed along with his fellow conspirators.
To celebrate the king’s survival, Londoners lit bonfires, and Parliament soon declared November 5th a national day of thanksgiving. Over time, the event evolved into Bonfire Night, marked by fireworks, effigy burning, and community gatherings. Today, it blends historical remembrance with festive tradition, keeping the story of the failed plot alive.
