Until 1998, all British Lifeboats were required to carry a canvas bag of oil attached to the anchor known as a ‘Wave Quelling Bag’, because oil was commonly used to calm troubled waters by reducing the wave height and the sea spray.

With only a tablespoon of oil required to calm half an acre of water, it forms a layer that is just one molecule thick – that’s enough to prevent waves on the surface!
