In the same year that we have celebrated the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the largest amphibian invasion in the history of warfare, we also mark 150 years since the birth of Sir Winston Churchill. He was born on 30th November 1874.
As Prime Minister, Churchill rallied the British people during World War II, leading the country from the brink of defeat to victory against Hitler’s Germany. D-Day, on 6th June 1944, was the turning point in the war, and it was a brave move, not only by the Prime Minister giving the order, but for all the troops – over 2 million, from 12 different nations – who fought. Many gave their lives for our freedom.
Winston Churchill is known for many things. He was a great Statesman, an inspiring orator, author, artist, and bricklayer! He had an unbreakable spirit and he simply refused to give in, even when things weren’t looking too good. He was known for his clever wit and rousing speeches – the most famous being his ‘Blood, toil, tears and sweat’ rhetoric of 1940.
He is the most famous Prime Minister this country has ever known, if not the greatest Briton of all time! To keep his memory alive, his image is now featured on the Sterling £5 note.
Happy Birthday, and thank you, Sir Winston!
